Plano was initially settled in 1840 as a farming community. Plano was incorporated on June 2, 1873, shortly after the Houston and Central Railroad opened. The railroad changed Plano from a farming community to a trading outpost. Downtown Plano began to thrive with the injection of commerce until a large fire consumed the city in 1896. As the city began to rebuild, many of the businesses placed deep roots that still remain in the area.
